KARBALA : The Sacrifice for Principles - By Hasan Yaqoob Advocate

Since the creation of the world it has been observed that the messenger of God who has been assigned to spread kindness, humanity, spirituality by means of religion has always been opposed by the evil forces and number of successors of evil forces who treated themselves as ruler tried to crush the messengers of God in different time and phases of the world.

Of course the history of world has number of heinous and cruel incident but the tragedy of karbala (desert in Iraq) on 10th of Moharram (ASHURA) was the most painful and cruel work of evil forces against the humanity and religion.

Hence, the entire world on each and every year remember the sacrifice of Imam Husain (a.s) who did not bow his head against the despicable forces. He gave his head but did not allow wicked ruler Yazeed to get succeeded in his nefarious designs.

The blood of Imam Husain (A.s) is oozing from the pages of history to convey message of selflessness to human societies. His words went beyond the desert of Karbala. He played his human role in the best possible way to reform the society and root out the dictatorial regime. He moved to free the individuals from the chain of slavery. An honorable death was far more reputable for him than a dishonorable life.

He sacrificed his life to uphold moral code, human practices and religious tenets.

It should be considered that Muharram symbolizes the best of the human spirit and moral principles. Therefore, one has to consider the messages and lessons that the revolution of Karbala teaches the societies.

Many lessons can be learnt from the tragedy of karbala – we learn to be brave, resilient and firm just as Imam Husain (a.s) and his companions were; that it is better to die with dignity than to live in humiliation; that our rights can be defended even in the face of death. True faith is tested in the hardest of adversities. As Mahatma Gandhi said about Imam Hussain (a.s) that “My faith is that the progress of Islam does not depend on the use of sword by its believers, but the result of the supreme sacrifice of Husain, the great saint. Adding that I learned from Husain how to achieve victory while being oppressed.” Edwar Gibbon, an english historian and member of parliament said about the great sacrifice of Imam Husain (a.s) that “in a distant age and climate, the tragic scene of the death of Hussain will awaken the sympathy of the coldest reader”.

We can also say that Moharram is a symbol of victory of humanity over vindictiveness.

Moharram is also known as a movement against the terrorism and a struggle against tyranny, teaches world to stand against terrorism and despotism. The tragedy of karbala itself is a message for every oppressed. "The Golden words of Imam Husain (a.s), “A Person like me can never pledge allegiance to a person like Yazeed” echoes in hundreds of millions of hearts till date and reminds them not just to disassociate themselves from cruelty and terrorism, but to stand against such movements as well. In short, Imam Husain’s (a.s) blood still injects new life into societies and inspire men to move against oppression and corruption.

By his supreme sacrifice at Karbala, Imam Husain (a.s) has drawn a line between humanity & cruelty, good deeds & misdeed which still keeps the generations away from sinfulness & transgression, acting as a torch bearer.
